Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The majority of our students come from low income families. However, we are also a model of true diversity, hosting students from a wide range of socioeconomic, ethnic, and national backgrounds.

Our diversity is one of our greatest assets as our students and their families bring a wide range of experiences and perspectives into the classroom.

My Project

Our students deserve to read book with characters that look like them, have similar lives, and are relatable. We often read books that take places in the past, foreign places, or have predominately white characters. While learning about people, places, things that are different that you is important, it is also critical for students to recognize themselves in literature.

Representation matters.

The Skin I'm In by Sharon G. Flake, is a book that every middle school student should read - and we are hoping to bring it to our students! The main character in The Skin I'm In is a seventh grade student who deals with issues of race, self-esteem, and bullying. These are all common things our students deal with on a regular basis. Reading this book with our seventh graders will be engaging, powerful, and important. Our hope is that the discussions raised through this book will give students the agency to stand up for themselves, develop self-esteem, and find self-love, which as you probably remember, these are not easy feats in middle school!
