Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are the kindest and most motivated kids I know. They come to class and have meaningful discussions about difficult topics; they consistently surprise me with their insight and depth of knowledge.

Our high school is part of an inner-city, low-income school district.

These kids are used to always getting furniture and books and supplies that are bottom of the barrel and classrooms that are more institutional than inviting; however, they show up every day willing to look beyond those hardships and make the most of each day.

Furthermore, all of my students have taken the extra step to success by signing up for advanced classes and degree programs that require much more of them than the average student. With the IB program, my students are striving to receive not only their high school diploma but also an International Diploma that could get them into any international program. One of my current students wants to become an interpreter for the UN, and she wants to start by going to college in France. She already speaks three languages!

These kids are amazing, and they deserve the absolute best that we can offer.

My Project

For the most part, I ask that my students buy their own books from stores like Half Price Books or used versions on Amazon. This play and novella, however, are much more difficult to find at these places, as they are not widely taught, and (this is a theory of mine) they are so good that no one sells them back to book stores! Since they are a little pricey for such short works, I'd like to be able to have class sets of both for students to use each year. We will use sticky notes for annotations so that the books remain usable, and every student who walks through my door will have access to two beautiful and masterful works by literary geniuses Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Friedrich Durrenmatt.

Both of these classic works, one a novella and the other a play, will introduce students to different formats of literature as well as international views on honor, deceit, community, gender, and how we treat each other as human beings.

I believe that the lessons students learn from these works will be invaluable as they make their way into the world and have more and more foreign experiences.
