Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am dedicated third grade teacher whom enjoys teaching the love for Social Studies and History to students. I work in a poor neighborhood in the South Bronx in NYC. More than 86% of the students in my school receive free lunch each day. I have been at this school for 7 years and enjoy bringing new experiences to students that have limited ideas, understanding and experiences of the world in which they live. I seek help to stimulate these students through literature to expand their minds. Many of the students that I teach have english as their second language. They don't really understand or have experiences of the world in which they live. Many students have not been outside of their own neighborhoods. This prohibits the connections that they can make to discussions within the classroom. It is my wish to provide the students that I teach with deeper understanding and deepen their comprehension of the world in which they are a part. Also, I want to gude them to question how things came to be and who some of the people were that helped our nation develop. It is very difficult to obtain literature supplies that students need to gain insightful information. Each year I struggle to gather materials to teach my students from. I often have to result to photo copying text to use in instruction. This is not the most effective way to teach children about the true value of great literature. With your help, I can stimulate the young minds that I nourish each day. I have requested a list of 25 book titles that I will need throughout my first 3 units of study with the students. Having the actual books in hand will enhance the student's learning and stimulate real text experiences. In order to make student learning meaningful, I request 6 copies of each book so that students can work in small groups cooperatively. At the end of each unit we will work on group projects to illustrate fact findings and significant details. Students in the South Bronx need a chance to learn just as much as students in wealthy communities. I wish to provide students in my classroom with various opportunities to experience places and persons outside of their "neighborhood" experiences. By obtaining the necessary literature, I feel the students will gain greater knowldge and understanding of the world in which they are a part. You can help to improve a child's reading experiences.
