My students need 3 copies of The Outsiders, Number the Stars, Tears of a Tiger, The Watsons Go to Birmingham, and Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl with their respective teacher guides.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Stork's classroom raised $237
This project is fully funded
My students are extremely hard workers, but when it comes to reading some of them really would rather take a nap!
Have you ever been forced to read a book that you just didn't like? Maybe you picked up the novel several times but just couldn't 'get into it.' You may have even tried to read a few chapters but hated every second of it.
Now imagine attempting to read books that are forced upon you- that you can't relate to- year after year!
Sadly, at times this is what my students experience in my classroom. While I try to teach novels that will appeal to everyone, I have found that there will always be a dissatisfied customer!
I would like to start a collection of novels students may turn to when they are having troubles connecting with the class-wide assigned literature. The novels I have chosen to build this collection with are stories that are often taught in high schools across the nation, but are not part of my school's curriculum.
We are located in the Arkansas Delta, one of the most diverse - yet mostly segregated- portions of the state. That is not to say that the high school in which I teach is solely for African-American students, but many of the wealthier families in the area send their children to private academies in nearby towns. 100% of our school receives free lunch and my students often are forced to attend classes without supplies.
I have come to realize that I cannot possibly provide enough pencils, pens, notebooks, or school clothes. I can however provide my students with a love of literature. My hope is that at least one student will walk away enthralled with one of the books provided through this project.
Reading alone will increase my students' test scores, comprehension, and fluency. A love of reading will increase their likelihood of attending college, obtaining a productive job of their choosing, and returning to help others in their high-needs community.
In an area with high unemployment and low college attendance rates, please give these students a chance!
