Help me give my students 15 copies of the book Deadly and 10 copies of The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate so that all students can read science-themed novels.
My 7th-grade students are a diverse group, representing a variety of socioeconomic levels, academic ability levels, nationalities, and more. We are a full-inclusion school, so I teach all students, including those with special needs, gifted, and English learners.
All of my students receive a rigorous STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and humanities education, along with a wide variety of engaging and relevant elective courses.
Following STEM principles, we have developed activity-based science courses in which students are guided through the topics while acquiring skills in experimentation, measuring, and lab techniques.
I believe science class should be fun, relevant, and engaging. I want students to love science so much that they choose to study it in high school and college.
My Project
My seventh-grade students will read "The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate" as well as a book called "Deadly." We already have a few copies of these books. These additional copies will allow students to read independently. Both of these books are highly engaging and tell the story of young girls who love science at a time when girls were not expected to study science or medicine. The heroines in each novel demonstrate curiosity and perseverance as they learn to pursue investigations with science.
Reading about strong girls who like science will help them feel that it is something they could do, too!
In "The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate," Callie records her scientific observations about nature in her journal and goes on many adventures. In "Deadly," Prudence is helping an epidemiologist understand the spread of typhoid fever. Reading these books will lead to a rich discussion about nature journals, women in science, the study of viruses, and more.
