My students need 30 subscriptions to Time for Kids and Weekly Reader to enhance their reading skills especially with non-fiction text. They are below level and lack prior knowledge and experience with scientific skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember learning to read and how you felt about it? My students come from such various learning abilities which makes teaching difficult at times. They have not learned to love education and love reading. I try to challenge them and show them that learning can be fun.
I have a class of 31 inner city students in CT.
There are 12 students in the class with special needs. They also have various abilities. Many of my students are not motivated and getting them to work is a challenge. They attend a K-8 grade school. Most of the students are neighborhood children.
My Project
The Time for Kids and Weekly Reader have always been a successful tool in my room. With the cost of supplies and the cuts in school budgets, this is the only way my students can get these materials. With the lack or limited vocabulary, my students have difficulty with comprehension and non-fiction text. Their parents do not buy or read newspapers so the materials are not available for them at home. Non-fiction text is a big part of out Connecticut testing. These materials will allow for us to practice and build their confidence. They also love to have their own copy to take home at the end of the lesson.
With these materials my students will become stronger, more confident readers.
That is a life long skill that will lead to success. I have used weekly readers in the past and the children love the topics, captions and the idea of holding their own magazines.
