Literature + Coding = Codeature!

My students need to hear about female scientists and mathematicians like Ada Bryan Lovelace and Grace Hopper. I would like a basket of STEM related literature to help motivate readers and coders.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Marshall's classroom raised $186

My Students

My students come from all over the globe to learn in a small and aging school. Our neighborhood is in a huge city with diverse ethnicity. Our class models the reality of our society, and I love seeing it work in real time!

Despite experiencing Hurricane Harvey last August, they have persisted in excelling academically and creatively with many outlets.

Many projects have involved technology, and I want to tie in literacy and safe choices with technology applications.

Students have so many opportunities using technology applications. I want them to make safe choices from an early age. These students have many opportunities for future careers in STEM careers, if they will have an open mind.

My Project

While my students experience a wonderful reading curriculum with leveled books in a range of topics, they don't have any literature related to technology. I want to inspire all students to develop an interest, vocabulary and safe understanding of computational thinking. Girls, especially, need encouragement to join a traditionally male field. Margaret and the Moon is the story of how Margaret Hamilton saved the first lunar landing!

By offering female examples of scientists, mathematicians, and computational thinkers, I hope to widen the opportunities for my students.

I also want to facilitate healthy habits with regards to use of technology. In "But It's Just a Game", Jasper learns to balance his life with relationships and sports, not just spend hours on video games. "The Technology Tail" is about the digital footprint we leave on the internet--such an important message from an early age.

These books specifically toward digital citizenship and understanding will perhaps lead these students toward being their best online at school and at home.
