Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 9th grade students are eager to learn more about their identity and constantly seek answers to what their individual purpose actually is. They are desperate to talk about relevant and engaging topics they face daily. My students have a growth set mentality and challenge themselves to reach our class’ high expectations.
One of my students said the following, “From time to time I think about how you invited me to move to your honors class, and it always brings a smile to my face!
First of all THANKS, Mrs. M. for making school an awesome experience! And for believing and motivating me to join English Honors. It was a great experience I will never forget. You will forever be one of the best teachers I ever had!” I love helping my students reach goals they never knew they could achieve.
My Project
Most students are familiar with dystopian novels or fairy tales. Many can use their imagination to picture themselves as the main character of a make believe world. However, this year, our 9th grade students will be challenged to read multiple real accounts of people who may be different from them.
This project focuses on surrounding students with memoirs, poetry, and novels in an attempt to help students find empathy and joy through reading.
Students will learn how reading fiction and nonfiction are different. They will learn to identify text structure including description, compare and contrast, sequential and numerical order, if/then, and problem/solution. In addition to reading multiple examples of informational texts as a class, students will have the experience of reading an informational text of their choice. Lastly, students will get the opportunity to write their own informational essay on a topic that interests them.
Students will also have the opportunity to read a memoir of their choice before they begin writing about their own life experiences. I want students to know that they are the authors of their own stories, and this project will give them exposure to many examples of individuals who have reached success despite their challenges.
