Literature Circle Reading Adventure

My students need 30 copies of A Walk Across America by Peter Jenkins and 30 copies of On the Road by Jack Kerouac for their literature circles.

My Students

Author Peter Jenkins wrote, "The thoughts in my head were like millions of flurries and kept piling up like banks of snow around me." My English 4 students feel the same way in their senior year. I want to show them they are not alone and others have experienced the same emotions. They should read!

My students are from low-income to middle class families.

Their reading levels vary significantly and most are reluctant readers. They receive most of their news from social media. In class, we read some British literature and some American literature. I try to inspire them to travel the world and seek out new adventures. They are concerned about the next step in their lives: what that will be, how they will reach it, and how they will pay for it. My students are interested in learning and advancing their skills. They just need the right materials.

My Project

To get my seniors more interested in reading, exposed to a variety of writers, and prepared for the world beyond the high school walls, I would like to implement a literature circle unit using Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, On the Road by Jack Kerouac, and A Walk Across America by Peter Jenkins. Literature circles allow for differentiated instruction, and students can independently apply the skills and strategies learned throughout the year for reading and discussion. I need copies of On the Road and A Walk Across America to start my project. The three novels mentioned, though published in different decades, are well written and have a common theme that I believe my 12th grade students would enjoy.

Through donations to this project, I will have the books I need to inspire my students to read and continue learning beyond high school.

With the right materials, students can develop comprehension and apply those skills to their own pursuit of experience.
