My Students

Have you ever tried starting up a literature circle program from scratch? I had no idea there would be so many books to buy at all the levels the students need them at! Each group is made up of seven students; they all need their own book, as well as enough books to last the entire school year!

My students come from all over the place and from various backgrounds.

They are so different from each other and make me laugh everyday. Some kids have been to championship Pokemon tournaments, some have made it to the state finals in gymnastics, and many love to play soccer and video games. My students are sweet kids and I've found time and again that they actually care about each other by helping one another out when needed. They are good kids that need to expand their reading repertoire and need to continue to grow academically.

My Project

Because our school doesn't have a library, whatever is in my own classroom library is what the students have access to if they don't get library books on their own. As a school we also don't have a resource room with book sets that other schools often have, so this program is being started from scratch. I am requesting several book sets with seven books in each set, and each book title is either a Newbery Award winner, or is written by an award-winning author. Examples of my requests are "Walk Two Moons" by Sharon Creech, "The Twenty-One Balloons" by William Pene Du Bois, and "Rabbit Hill" by Robert Lawson. The reason I chose these books is because I'd like to expose the students to high-quality writing, and let them explore books that they would normally not check out at a library.

Not only are my students going to read fantastic, award-winning books, they are also going to dive deeper into vocabulary, literary devices, and writing techniques.

These literature circles are not just to enjoy literature, but to exercise the standards put forth by our state. These books that you help purchase will allow me to teach my standards while at the same time making the learning fun and exciting. Thanks for helping make this program a success!
