Literature as a Vehicle for Reflection and Revision
Help me give my students their own copies of transformative texts they will engage with in preparation for a graduation-level oral presentation.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
For the third year in a row, I'm requesting sets of books so that each student can have their own individual copies to keep. This practice has been transformative in my classroom because it allows students to really dig deep into the text. Because they have their own copies they can take home, write in, and then keep once we've finished reading, students are more invested in and engaged with the topics covered in both Heavy: An American Memoir by Kiese Laymon and Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo.
My goals for this semester's English class is to create a space where students feel safe to deeply reflect about their experiences, connect these reflections and experiences to what we're reading and analyzing in the texts, and then finally, creating a final project they have thoughtfully revised and are proud of.
It is hard to put into words how special my students are. The incoming 12th grade class at CSSJ is full of bright, curious, thoughtful young people who seek out new experiences and are seeking out experiences, discussions, and tasks that better prepare them for life beyond high school. I feel grateful to have gotten to build with these students the past four years and am incredibly honored and excited to be working with them in English class this year.
