This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work as a counselor in a Title I school district. We are a multi-cultural school with many of our students coming from low socioeconomic backgrounds, single-parent homes, foster homes, and multi-family homes. Our students enjoy coming to school, and they are surrounded by faculty and staff who genuinely care for not only their academic success but their Social-Emotional Learning as well.

Our school's vision statement is, “We create a world of learning built on a foundation of care and respect that unifies parents, students, teachers, and community as one.”

Working together with parents, students, teachers, and the community to create a positive school environment permeates every detail of our students' educational experience.

Our vision isn't just a nice statement, it truly drives everything we do.

This year, our 4th grade and Kindergarten teachers have come together with a "reading buddies" program. Many of our 4th graders enjoy checking out the Ninja Life Hacks and Little Spot books I currently have in my office to read with their Kindergarten buddies. These books teach SEL lessons such as identifying emotions, emotional regulation, and relationship skills. Not only are they improving their reading and sharing the love of reading with one another, using these books they are also developing SEL skills necessary to become well-adjusted, emotionally balanced citizens in our global society.

These books will also be used during classroom guidance lessons as well, which is why I believe the will be an asset to our counseling program. During these lessons, I will often have students create their own emotional "scribble spot" where different colors represent different emotions they are experiencing. The stickers will add character to the scribble spots and give more insight into a students emotional state.

These books will be a resource that will keep on giving.
