My Project
Throughout the Middle School curriculum, in multiple subjects, our students learn about refugee experiences across the globe in both present and historical contexts. Some examples include crossing the United States southern border undetected, hiding from Nazi soldiers in Germany, walking 300 miles on foot in Southern Sudan, and leaving everything behind because of war in Syria.
Teachers rely on our school library to provide supplemental materials that further enriches what students learn in the classroom.
Nonfiction books verify information, memoirs share first-hand experiences, and graphic novels help our students better visualize and comprehend content. Having a variety of formats, languages, copies, genres, authors, and stories is not only helpful for students and teachers, it is an equity issue. Diversity in our Libraries enables us to better reach even our most hesitant readers because we can hand them the book that piques their interest, reflects their experience, or caters to their learning style.
The books listed here will be added to the Mount Vernon Middle School Library collection for students and staff to check-out again and again. With your help, this grant will provide our school with new titles, updated editions, and more copies of various refugee stories that support the curriculum taught in both English Language Arts and Social Studies classes. Please consider donating to this project that will increase the breadth and depth of literature about various refugee crises that our school Library can offer to support our classroom learning.
