Literary Writing and Communication

My Students

As a special education co-teacher my classes are comprised with a mixture of general education and special education students, with varying needs. Many students struggle with organizational skills, school preparedness, as well as personal needs such as food and clothing. This project should hopefully, meet many of the organizational and school preparedness needs of my students.

Since covid, school is now broken.

What this means, is that students are finding themselves in situations where they have to follow imposed school rules/expectations, whereas, for the last year and a half, they have been mostly at home, making their own choices without having a parent setting global expectations for eating, going to the restroom, politeness toward others and other social expectations. In addition to these norms, as a teacher we are expected to provided emotional and mental health supports toward our students, that we are not necessarily trained for.

I believe that the supports provided through this program will help with these emotional, social and basic needs of my students.

My Project

Due to covid, school is broken. Students are having to re-learn how to be productive and follow school expectations/norms. Doing this is difficult, for some, due to having been "learning" at home without much supervision, but still having the same expectations of passing their classes. Having paper, pencils, composition notebooks and printer ink all for student projects is one more step to more school success. Our goal is to encourage and support student writing and communication through writing in an environment where students experience freedom to express their ideas without judgement from others.
