My Project

"Esperanza Rising" by Pam Munoz Ryan is a piece of historical historical fiction literature that showcases perseverance, compassion, and humility leading up to Cesar Chavez's civil rights movement of the 1930's in central California. This popular piece is a staple in our 5th grade curriculum, and we focus mostly on how the characters choose to overcome the struggles they face.

While studying character development and traits, story arc and sequence, as well as the author's important themes, I feel that every fifth grader deserves to have their own copy of "Esperanza Rising" during our novel study.

There is more ownership over their learning and more buy-in about the discussions this novel reveals. Because of the growth in our student population since the return in in-person instruction, our school needs a class set so every 5th grader can benefit from this novel study.
