My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.

They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners.

My Project

My students take great pleasure in listening to stories. Hearing a book read on tape helps students see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It helps them focus on the sounds of words, read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Audio books also gives students an important introduction to listening — a skill that they must master in order to learn to read.

Audio books emphasize reading as a source of pleasure rather than a skill, and make children eager to learn how to read.

Narrators on tape tend to embellish their storytelling with silly voices and dramatic enhancements. Beyond their sheer enjoyment of audio books, children also develop a sense of narrative structure and understanding of language. Stories on tape help them to grasp the rich and various ways in which language distills and conveys meaning. In addition, exposing students to a range of narrators and their different styles of reading will deepen their grasp of the reading process.

Each child will have their own set of earphones and book tote to transport their materials to the listening center. The book boxes will help organize each child's supplies along with the materials and resources of our classroom and listening library. The collection of books and CD's allows for a small group of children to enjoy listening together and offers the experience of fiction as well as non-fiction texts. The bean bags and soft pillows will create flexible seating and a comfortable area conducive to learning.

Our listening center will help enrich my student's multi-sensory experiences with books, add variety to their reading adventures and support the development of critical thinking and comprehension skills.
