Literacy through Social Studies

My students need blank books to develop writing and publishing skills as well as white boards and markers to work on drafting ideas and editing skills.

My Students

In my classroom, I try to provide a variety of hands on experiences that appeal to many styles of learning.

My school is located in a developing area with many young families.

Our school is working to grow relationships throughout the community and to foster a sense of belonging among the students. Many students here have attended many elementary schools and will not finish their primary school career at this one. I want to provide high level learning opportunities for my students in the short time that I have them in my charge.

My Project

My fourth grade students will learn about our state's history as part of our social studies curriculum. I will integrate this with our literacy emphasis on non-fiction writing. As we study our state, students will develop a draft for a reference book with important facts they have learned. White boards will be used to develop ideas and practice editing skills. Students will use the blank books to publish a final copy of their work.

With the donation of whiteboards, markers and blank books, my students will experience the full spectrum of the writing process, from research, to drafting, and finally publishing a keepsake quality product they can be proud of.

Through this project, my students will learn not only important social studies and literacy skills, but feel a sense of achievement and success that will help them to love learning.
