Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year our school is piloting an exciting, brand new course: Literacy Through Game Design. Each child requested to be in this course, and has demonstrated good citizenship and the minimum academic requirements. Our community is not wealthy, and many of our kiddos experience hardship on a regular basis. We hope these deserving children can learn literacy skills and teamwork through the study of board games, card games, word games, and tabletop roleplaying games (RPGs). Second semester they will be creating their own original games and content for RPGs. We are most definitely not studying video game design (though that is cool too!).
We also want them to get outside and be active, learning new sports and analyzing the rules of outdoor games they are not familiar with.
These young people have a lot of energy, and we want them to use it in positive ways while they are at school. We did a trial run with some borrowed equipment, and the kids' reaction was unanimous: they definitely want to get serious about learning this new sport!
Having this disc golf equipment will let our students design virtual disc golf courses in online disc golf apps, then make them a reality out on our PE field, both for their own enjoyment, and also for that of other students at our school. This way they can learn to be active creators of sports and game opportunities instead of just being passive consumers, even if they aren't top atheletes themselves.
