Literacy Through Art: Reader's Theater

My project needs 15 diverse arts and craft supplies, which includes masks sets, plates, plastic accessories, readers' theater books and/or materials, and a readers' theater stage.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Whren's classroom raised $660

This project is fully funded

Readers are leaders and at an urban public charter school with limited resources, high school students who are remedial need different ways to learn, such as readers' theater and similar mini-projects. During the 2007-2008 school year, my reading classes will work on three readers' theater projects. Because of a lack of funding, we need a lot of materials. For the first project students will work on character scrapbooks in reading class. With each play (there will be four) the students read and perform, they will have to create and develop characters and in groups write a new scene or monologue at least twice. In order to do so, the students will need collage kits, craft supplies, accesories and props, and a stage in the classroom. The second project is also a year-long one. Students will work on a class scrapbook. This will help them in terms of their ninth grade projects. Each semester the ninth graders will have an across-the-curriculum project. The first will deal with the nation's capitol and the many memorials and the later with the Anacostia waterfront development and the affects of gentrification in the area and how this affects their communities and neighborhoods. The third project will be for the students to create storytelling books and put on a play for the elementary students. This will help the high school students to model reading and a love of it to the younger students. Finally, reading is a tremendous problem for students of color, in particular those who live in an urban environment. They are already behind other students nationally due to lack of resources, lack of space, and overpopulated schools. By supporting this program, you will aid in the strengthening and empowering of our future leaders, readers, and college bound students.
