This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school sits on the edge of Richmond, California. LDMS has a student population that largely consists of Latinx and Black students, and almost one-third of the students are English Language Learners. All of my students come from diverse countries, families, and socio-economic standings that lead to a rich cultural environment. However, due to the high poverty rate in my county, many students are not afforded the hands-on, extracurricular education that they deserve.

My goal is to create a curriculum that is hands-on, student-centered, and relevant to their lives.

I personally teach Science for students in the English Language Development (ELD) program, which means students can be newcomers who just entered the country with little to no English to students who are upper level.

My Project

The books that are bought will be added to my classroom library. During our school's sustained silent reading (SSR) time, the students will have more options when choosing what to read.

Having a linguistically diverse classroom library is important in supporting literacy in the home language and when acquiring a new language.

When students have books that are lexically appropriate and interesting, it gets them excited! Many of my students have recently arrived to the United States and do not have access to age-appropriate reading.

The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. This project will help enrich their experiences with the printed word
