Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are interested in the world around them. They are city kids with a keen interest in learning new things. They love to explore, to write, to build and to read. They come into my class with little to no socialization, so we spend the beginning of our year learning procedures and how to be good students.

My students come from an impoverished background, but they also have strong family ties and parents who want the best for them.

Our school is very large and with the latest state budget cuts, our class will be much larger than normal. This won't stop us from becoming a school family looking out for each other and learning everything we can in this first pivotal year of school.

My Project

My students have a very limited amount of time for free choice literacy centers. To take out and find the parts, put it together and start work can take a Kindergartener a long time. A ready made center box with materials that are easy to store ensures that the student can actually begin, work and clean up by themselves. This encourages them to take control of their own learning journey. The learning is much more natural if it's presented in a game or activity that the student looks forward to. I think students will be able to collaborate and these kits will foster independence in them.
