Literacy: Parent Book Club Keeps Them Coming Back

My students need 8 packs of colored paper, a collage box of paper, Keurig K-Cup Brewer, Hot Cocoa and Hot Apple Cider K-Cups.

My Students

Do you have memories of a parent reading to you? Did you have a male figure in your life read to you at home or school? Have you read with a parent while drinking a warm drink and doing a craft?

I am fortunate to work in a low socioeconomic school district in a school where over 95% of the students are on free or reduced cost lunch services.

My school provides two meals a day, sometimes the only meals these students receive in a day. My school is a high need school with limited resources. The student population consists of non-English speakers, military families, diverse families, and single parents.

My Project

Over the years I have researched and implemented strategies, built relationships, and tutored to help students become stronger readers. After many years of research, I have discovered having a father or father figure involved in school, as well as, reading with their student makes an incredible difference. The club will facilitate fathers or father figures in their student’s literacy development and improve the quality of their relationship. I have one project funded for some books to start the club. To keep them coming back, I would like to provide crafts and refreshments. Having many different paper choices will allow them to make crafts for extending the books we are reading. Since we will be working after school, a Keurig K-Cup Brewer for Hot Cocoa and Apple Cider will make this a cozy, relaxing, and fun club.
