Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my first year teaching Kindergarten and it has been a learning experience for me. My students are amazing and ready to learn. They can't wait to learn to read and they really are excited to learn hands on. I've discovered that these students learn best through play.

My students come from poverty.

Hardworking immigrant families make up most of our demographic. There is also a portion which is transient. While language can be a barrier, our families are supportive and want what is best for their children. The school itself is a large title one school in a metropolitan area. There are a lot of things my students have faced that are shocking and heartbreaking. But they come to our safe classroom every day and get a fresh opportunity to get fed, feel safe, and to contribute. Each one of them is an important person and they deserve every opportunity to learn.

My Project

These resources are geared for literacy and math stations. I teach in small group and the other students need relevant activities to practice and master while I'm teaching focused lessons. My classroom is designed this way so I can differentiate. Some students in Kindergarten are ready to read. Some still need practice with letter sounds. These ready made literacy and math centers are great games and hands on practice of concepts I've previously taught. They are leveled to skills that only certain students are working on at a time. I'm noticing as the year progresses I have less time to make these centers and the ones I make aren't as sturdy as the ones I requested. They also love STEM and the magna tiles will be an open ended center. I love seeing their structures and designs.

This project will peak interest levels by providing fun hands on activities.

They will also help with social skills as the students work together to practice and self check . These boxed games are targeted toward the skills they need to make it to first grade. The students need to be immersed in literacy and math. They don't get that at home at all. The learning comes naturally when they have the right supplies and my job gets easier. My students are ready to reach their goals.
