My students are struggling readers and I want to ignite a fire in them to learn to love the written word. If I can get them to CHOOSE to want to read and actually enjoy it, I would be one happy teacher!
My school is a District 75 school in Brooklyn that serves students with various special needs.
I work with a fantastic group of 5th graders who struggle with emotional and behavioral issues. Because of the many obstacles my students face, their academic progression is often compromised. I want them to not be afraid of reading...to feel comfortable and relaxed. I always tell them how important it is to read but if they struggle and feel insecure, it won't matter. I am determined to get them to a point where they want to read and feel more confident doing so.
My Project
I am looking to create a literacy lounge in my classroom. My classroom is rather large and it has a whole lot of space to create this area. I would love a couch and chair to create an inviting space where students can grab a magazine or a book of their choice and just relax. My first goal is to entice them to want to be in this area surrounded by books and I know for sure a comfy and great looking seating area will be the way! The area will be set up in a way that interesting books and magazines will be in their view and they will pick them and and begin to leaf through the pages. This is just the beginning to a greater goal.
I also do a daily read aloud and I would love to conduct them in a more relaxing setting rather than having them sit on their hard seats.
My hope is that they will begin to have a love for reading and not find it such an intimidating thing to do!
Your donation to this project will make a huge difference in the lives of my students.
I desperately want them to bring their reading levels up and not get so overwhelmed when confronted with text. They need to feel relaxed. That's step number one. The classroom environment is so important to me because I see the difference it makes in my kids. They were thrilled to receive a rug from generous donors, I can only imagine how they'll react to a brand new seating area!
