As a librarian in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of school. Despite the many challenges they face, my students are eager to learn. Academic success does not come easily or quickly. I strive to create a media center that is warm, safe and welcoming while maintaining a fun, creative learning atmosphere. When most people think of the library, they think of a place where you go to search for a book. I want the Library Media Center is to be so much more than that. I want it to be a place where students can learn, design, and emphasize STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. They are all eager to learn, to perform, to read, and to express themselves creatively and productively. My school is working hard to integrate STEM activities into our curriculum, and our students are responding with enthusiam.
My Project
My students need LEGOS , base plates, to create an epic LEGO wall. The laptop and ink printer will give my students the opportunity to become designers and authors. The women of NASA LEGO set may inspire some of my students to work towards careers in science.
Exposing students to hands-on STEM activities will engage them in exploring, discovering and learning and will help to ensure their success in the future.
Making and creating will transform our students from consumers of products into designers and inventors. It will foster their sense of creativity. Giving our students a chance to build with LEGOs, may spark them to be the engineers, inventors and scientists of the 21st Century.
