Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Middle school reading intervention is often the last chance for students to become proficient readers. As an English Language Arts teacher in a high-need NYC community serving both general education and special education students, I meet bright shining students every year that struggle to read beyond a third grade level.
Often these readers excel at math, have higher level thinking skills, engage in lively group discussion, but shut down when it comes time to open a book. For different reasons they enter my class reading two or three grade levels below where they should be, and it is the single thing that keeps them from reaching their academic potential. If these struggling readers reach high school without catching up, chances are they never will.
While I would love for my students to become passionate readers, my single goal is to help them become proficient readers. Only then will they have equitable opportunities in high school and beyond. After researching how best to help adolescent struggling readers, I have devised a plan that addresses reading at every level (from phonics to fluency) with fun word activities, audio book "clubs," and even incorporating music/lyrics into the classroom. In essence, it is a comprehensive ATTACK method that will leave my students hooked on reading... so they can leave me ready for the challenges of high school!
Literacy is the key to all of the right doors for my students. It is what will make or break them and I will do everything in my power to make sure they are not broken. And you can help! With your help, these middle school students will become proficient readers for life.
