My Students
"Scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge." ~ Stephen Hawking.
This quote by Hawking describes the goal I have for my students by the end of the school year. I want them to become scientists in search of finding answers to everyday problems.
My students generally come from a high socioeconomic background so they are not lacking in opportunity.
The challenge with my students is coming up with something new and innovative to capture their attention, inspire them, and push them to the next level. My students want to know how science relates to their lives. They are teens and by the nature of their developmental level, they crave interaction and a way to fit concepts into their own experiences. I find this age level to be uniquely suited to project-based learning and peer collaboration. The students are fun to be around, positive, and able to be inspired.
My Project
We are a school in an affluent neighborhood, but being able to have supplies and materials from year-to-year is still an issue for us. With Common Core now becoming part of our lesson planning, I need materials to help me improve the literacy skills of my students in science. I've looked at several student science magazines and Science World is great option for them. The articles are relevant and interesting to the students, and the magazine aligns the articles with Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). They also provide online materials to further expand on the ideas explained in the articles.
I received a sample copy of Science World to try out with my students and they loved it!
We read one of the articles in the magazine together and had such a great discussion in small groups and as a whole class. I felt like they really learned something from the article we read. I would love to continue this positive momentum in science reading by getting a subscription for my students. I know that this will help improve their literacy skills as well as increase their love of reading.
