Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students live in a culturally diverse community and is identified as high poverty. The students in our classroom are aged 3-5 and identified as special needs. We service a variety of children with disabilities; including Autism, Down's Syndrome, Physically Impaired, Health Impaired and Speech & Language Impairment. They attend school 4 days a week, 3 hours a day. All of the children in the class have Individualized Education Programs, which means that we focus on a range of needs. In addition to academics and self-help skills, I believe we are preparing these young children to be good citizens. I take great pride in teaching them how to learn, how to be a good friend and how to make the most of their individual potential.
My Project
Our students will benefit from a variety of options to experience literacy. My hope is that they learn to love reading and literacy. When young children are allowed to explore through hands-on learning with materials that match the book we are reading it makes the stories come to life. The materials in this project include development appropriate books with silly themes to encourage engagement, and felt pieces to go along with the stories. I have also included flannel boards which will allow the students to have time with the characters and pieces of the story to retell and act out the situations. When the stories come to life for the children, it helps them process and store the information better. It also encourages participation, attention and engagement. Our students have a variety of disabilities and every student has an Individualized Education Program. When we have the materials to match their individual learning styles, we see much more progress and interest.
