My Project

As an English teacher, I know that reading and writing are fundamental literacy skills that can be fostered and enriched by including high-interest reading materials for young adults in the high school English/language arts classroom. Making these particular novels available to my students will open their minds to new perspectives and conversations that serve to build bridges across communities as well as foster literacy. For example, the nonfiction novels, Just Mercy and Educated, will be the anchor texts of a social justice novel unit designed to enhance their critical literacy skills. Students thrive when they are given opportunities to use their critical thinking skills in situations that inspire and interest them.

Although I have many aspirations for my English/language arts class, one of the most important goals I have is to inspire generations of lifelong readers who honor diversity and appreciate multicultural literature.

The particular novels I have chosen are not only age-appropriate and high-interest, but are also academically challenging enough to fulfill this goal and to foster the literacy skills of our students at our High School as we work as a whole to build and inspire lifelong learners.
