My Project
Reading The Great Gatsby is a rite of passage for most high school students. It is a novel that many people will remember long after they read as the story resonates deeply with a variety of readers.
As an 11th grade English teacher, I love introducing The Great Gatsby with my students.
However, English Language Learners may struggle with the language and not get the full impact of the story, so they can feel left out of what should be a universal experience. I would like to provide my ELL students with the graphic novel versions of Gatsby to help them enrich their literacy and read an American classic. Using visuals can be a significant tool to aid ELLs in understanding the text and improving literacy. By providing a visual version of the novel while reading the print version aloud, it is my hope to not only increase skills, but also get them excited about reading in general.
I work at a school where 100% of students qualify for free lunch and we have a high population of ELLs. Please help them experience this American classic and bolster excitement for reading.
