Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a low economic background where their neighborhood is surrounded by negativity, crime and violence. Somehow my students manage to come to school every day despite their current rural surroundings.

My school is a safe haven for all the children in the community where they can come and feel safe and know that each person in the building loves each of them whole-heartily.

The majority of my students are more than two grade levels behind and need additional material in order to build them up to their rightful grade level. We currently have about 50% of our students who reside in a homeless shelter nearby. Based on the current data, students require additional phonics practice to build them up to their current grade level.

My Project

I currently have a club that I am hosting for students in grades13 and 2. It is a club that I host to help struggling readers get better at reading. My reading club is held after school and I need snacks and a laptop to help my students. My students will select books of interest and we will read them as a group. We will use the laptop to have the books read out loud. This will be a way for my students to understand how to read fluently. They will be able to hear it and then repeat it afterwards. This will start to build their confidence in reading.

The laptop will serve as our way to read books and the snacks will be use to give my students a bite to eat before they go home.

My students eat at 10:30 in the morning, the snacks will allow them to have something to eat before they go home.
