Literacy Circles

My students need new books for next year's literacy circles.

My Students

Believe it or not, my students were actually asking to do literacy circles by the end of the school year. These new books will continue to keep them engaged.

My seventh and eighth grade students attend an urban elementary school in Pennsylvania.

They made great gains on last year's state tests and I believe it is due in part by conducting regular literacy circles. They like to read more contemporary works and have mentioned these books on several occasions.

My Project

Students managing their own book groups was one of the highlights of my school year. Watching each member perform a variety of jobs within their group and taking that responsibility seriously was awesome. Literacy circles are conducted almost every day in our classroom so needless to say we rip through a lot of books each year. Our classroom library is growing and so is my students' love of reading.

I have requested books like Divergent, Mockingjay, and The Hunger Games.

These books will create an educational environment in which learning comes from talking to one another. These books will take our literacy program to another level by giving my students more to discuss, debate, predict and analyze.
