My students need a literacy center to enhance learning. I have requested hand-on items like magnetic letters, alphabet folder games, story sequencing cards, alphabet bingo, and more.

My Students
Learning can be fun! I believe in balanced literacy where kids can learn and have fun at the same time. I want my kids to enjoy learning academic work in class and be able to work independently, with a partner, and in a group. My dream is to help them become a learner who loves to learn.
I have a group of second language learners from different countries.
They speak different languages like Chinese, Korean, Arabic, and Spanish. Most of them do not speak a word of English. However their eagerness in learning English is so strong which is the reason why as their ESL teacher I am motivated for making my lessons fun and engaging every day! Many of these children not only have language difficulties but their social and emotional needs are being neglected too because of their living and family backgrounds. They come to school with a lot of issues. However, when they learn and work with their classmates, their smiles and silliness have deeply touched my heart. I have more than 75 first grade students. it is a challenge every day to go to different classes and work with different students, but I am grateful that the school is very supportive and giving their best to provide the optimum services for these children. The ESL team works closely to support everyone.
My Project
I wanted to create a literacy circle where kids get to work with their friends or independently on different skills. All of my first graders are second language learners and most of them do not speak a word of English. It is very hard to engage them all at once especially when they speak different languages. However I noticed that when we include visual and hands-on activities, students are more motivated, attentive, and usually understand the content faster. In addition, their social skills are very low too due to their family and living backgrounds. Therefore, with literacy circle activities, I can engage them with hands-on and visual supports to promote learning. And having them working in groups or partners collaboratively in these centers will improve their social skills as well. My students need a literacy center to enhance learning. I have requested hand-on items like magnetic letters, alphabet folder games, story sequencing cards, alphabet bingo, and more.
I can envision the excitement my students will have when they see all these puzzles/phonics games.
I am sure not only their academic language will be improved but their social and emotional needs will be improved as they learn to work collaboratively with their classmates. They will love to learn as the learning is so hands-on and interactive. They will feel better about themselves as their social and emotional skills are improved.
