FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. T.'s classroom raised $668
This project is fully funded
Our k-2 children have many different needs that are met through a variety of methods and materials. Our newest learning initiative is to divide the students from grades K-2 into Guided reading groups according to their ability. These groups are each taught by a teacher who has had reading expertise. The students are taught in their guided reading groups daily for one hour. Through this type of grouping, students are on the level that they are most likely to succeed. They are moved up or down levels as needed to allow them to progress quickly.
We are in need of money for materials to fund this program. Our students have limited income, so school supplies are a problem for them to keep. We would like to have donations for these children so that they can have new school boxes, book bags and supplies.
Our school is in a rural setting, although it combines chidren with rural and suburban as well as urban backgrounds. Some children live in homes, others live in trailer parks and some live in apartments. Some children receive free or reduced lunch, while others can pay their own way.
We feel, as teachers of reading, that children need to receive as many ways to learn to read as they need to be successful. Therefore, changing from their classroom teacher to others on the staff is our way of varying the people who teach, as well as the way of teaching. We have found that this variety helps children learn better. They are still taught reading in their own classroom, but this leveled reading instruction allows for children to learn on the level that they are existing. It allows better readers to read more complex materials and weak readers to experience different methods to allow their success.
We will begin this instruction after December break and continue it through the end of the school year. There will be approximately 200 students involved in our leveled reading program during the 2006-2007 school year.
