This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students have been significantly impacted by COVID-19 in multiple ways. The primary avenues that I see this impact are with literacy as well as skills associated with college & careers.

Beginning with literacy, students' scores around the nation have lagged.

Mine are no exception. As a 7th grade teacher, my current students suffered the effects of covid around 4th grade. This is a major time in their reading development. A lack of exposure to strong and interesting texts, accompanied with a lack of formal education, has continued to negatively affect them to this day. Providing my students with a robust classroom library that includes books ranging in topic and difficulty will help them overcome these obstacles.

The other aspect I've seen lingering effects in is the "grit" associated with educational achievement. Specifically, the abilities to study, practice, ask questions, and improve with feedback have all succumbed to COVID's effects. I teach a class called AVID that aids with improving these skills by teaching a variety of topics. One of these is called "tutorials," which are essentially highly structured study groups. These tutorials require the use of a whiteboard. A mobile whiteboard would allow me to make additional groups, which would provide each student with more time in their study group.

I hope this explains why these materials would be useful for my students and make an impact!
