My group of second graders are amazing! They work hard, put forth their best efforts, and their resiliency after Hurricane Michael is second to none! After Hurricane Michael, many of my students were without power for weeks, and a number of them (including myself) did not have homes and are still living in temporary housing situations. Our county went from 63 students meeting the definition of homeless to over 1200.
The community has pulled together and we are picking up the pieces.
Although we are still a long way from where we once were, we are definitely on the path to recovery. Many students will still need support and therapy in the school system. The school district did not ask for school supplies or backpacks this year but provide what they could. The students have shown concern for each other, and the teachers, during these extreme times. They have listened to each other's stories, and have shown extreme flexibility in the day-to-day.
My Project
I will incorporate these magazines and books into my reading instruction. It is critical for students to have magazines, and authentic texts in their hands while they are learning different reading strategies.
The research shows it is critical for students to have a copy of the text in their hands for engagement and success.
This project, when funded, will help make this a reality for these students who have conquered many things already. Reading instruction will be engaging and exciting for my students.
Not only has our area suffered from Hurricane Michael but this school was already a Title I, high poverty school. By incorporating current magazines into their instruction, I will be able to broaden their world through pictures.
