Literacy and Music

My students need 60 soprano recorders to develop literacy in the music room.

Music is magic in developing literacy! (Nellie Edge) Children are "wired" for sound and rhythm.  Music can play an important role in language and literacy development.

I teach music in an inner city school. 81.9% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. The children face many challenges and among them is developing literacy. I believe in the power of music. I've seen children who couldn't read text, gain confidence and skill when they began to learn to read music. This is especially true for older pre-readers: getting the hang of tracking left to right, down the page, and making meaning out of symbols is the same for music as it is for words. It's a new way to approach the situation and often a student finds freedom in that new start. Reading simple music helps develop both the confidence and the skills to read prose. Learning to read and play music on an instrument has been shown to be very effective in actively involving both sides of the brain. Learning to read music and play it on the recorder has been time tested and "kid approved" as a way to develop this skill. Through this experience students develop not only language literacy, but also music literacy. It furthermore paves the way for future involvement in school band. The more involved in school activities a student is, the more likely s/he is to remain actively involved in school.

Bringing special supplies is a big challenge for most of our families. When I proposed to our principal that I teach recorder to the 5th graders, both as a way to support our literacy program and to prepare students for beginning band in the 6th grade, we realized that the only thing stopping us was money. I have the music and the skill. We need the instruments.

This donation will make it possible for many students to experience literacy for the first time. Those who can read and enjoy the written word, will develop a new level of literacy and achievement when they become musically literate as well. This is big bang for the buck! Literacy AND music AND happy kids!
