This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My music students range in age from Pre-K to Upper EIementary.
I teach music to children who are on the autism spectrum in New York.
I have the pleasure of working with all of the students in the early childhood department of our school during music class. My students are enthusiastic learners and love participating in all kinds of musical learning activities. They enjoy dancing, singing, reading song books, and playing musical instruments. They really look forward to coming to music class!
My Project
Teaching early childhood music to students with special needs, I incorporate many different modalities of learning to motivate and engage my students, as well as increase language development. One great resource to teach different concepts and topics with is song books.
Many of my students are visual learners, and I try to use various supports to promote student engagement including books.
With the use of books, literature, and pictures, my students are able to learn songs, lyrics, and text. I am asking for 22 books to add to our music classroom library. The students will have access to browse, select, and read the books. The books will also be used in whole group instruction during sing along activities. We are also setting up a listening center, where the books will be available for the students to read and enjoy as they listen to the accompanying songs using our classroom iPad.
These books will provide many hours of joy to my students, and give us the ability to introduce new songs in a wonderful way. This project will have a far-reaching and lasting impact on all of my students for many years to come!
