I am a Pre- K teacher at Dr. C. R. Drew Science Magnet. Our school is located in a highly depressed area of the city of Buffalo. Three quarters of my students enter school each year lacking basic skills.
Exposing the children to a variety of manipulatives that reinforce these essential literacy skills is imperative. One way that I have addressed this problem is by setting up literacy activities throughout my classroom. These activities involve ABC knowledge, sequencing of letters, beginning sound knowledge and rhyming skills.
The children are allowed to rotate through these activities which provide constant repetition of key skills. In addition, the centers allow adjustments to be made to accommodate individual strengths and weaknesses. The children enjoy working independently with these activities and they also provide constructive reinforcement of our small group instruction.
However, because these "centers" are always "hands-on" they quickly become worn and tattered. I would like to purchase a variety of new literacy manipulatives to replace those that have become lost and tattered. Giving my students a number of ways to develop and extend their learning is a goal I strive for each and every day!
