My Students
My 8th and 11th graders are amazing! My students - all girls - are striving to be leaders in their own lives, families, and communities. Many will be the first in their families to attend college. Our school's mission is to have 100% of our students graduate from high school and be successful at a 4-year college or university. Additionally, we work to establish a sisterhood of women ready to become leaders of the future in all career fields. This cannot be possible without making learning relevant to our students' passions and goals and giving them the tools to broaden their worlds.
My Project
A strong culture of independent reading in a classroom engages kids and helps them grow their interests, knowledge of the world, independence as learners, and reading levels. But that can only happen when there is a wide variety of high-interest, in-demand books populating a classroom library. We also need enough of them to go around.
In my classroom, we need more independent reading books to replenish our classroom library.
Throughout all of last year, excited students requested a variety of titles and genres of books, but specifically more thrillers and dystopian fiction. They also requested more current and interesting non-fiction books to read. This list of books would help our classroom library meet the needs and interests of those readers, and draw in more reluctant readers toward building their reading lives.
