My Students
My students are thoughtful, inquisitive and risk takers. My students trust the work they are challenged with every time they step into my classroom. More importantly, they trust me to facilitate a journey throughout the year that pushes them to not only become better students but to truly discover who they are and what is important to them, not just as scholars but as part of humankind.
All students have the capacity for greatness, and our learning together is one more step on the road to discovering where the path will take them.
Our school is a truly special place and my students come from all over the area to attend our school. Our students identify as 80% male making it important to bring books representing a wide range of diverse groups. As a teacher of 12th graders this year, I am able to support the development of foundational skills essential to the understanding of what it means to design and make clothing. It's an honor and a privilege to teach them each day and I never cease to be impressed by their capacity for greatness.
My Project
In an effort to change the face of what AP literature can be, I have chosen Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, a West African inspired fantasy novel as one of the anchor texts for next year. When we think of AP Lit, we tend to think of the canon and, while the plays of Shakespeare and the poetry of John Donne have an important place, there are new works to be considered.
We are fortunate to have a classroom culture that is representative of the diversity of cultures that make up our amazing city.
As an English teacher, I can not take for granted the value of students seeing themselves in the main characters of the books we read. This year my goal is to bring a multitude of authors from all over the world into my classroom.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
