This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our nation's economic crisis is severely impacting the Title 1 school I work at, as well as the personal lives' of my students. I teach 6th-8th grade ESL and Sheltered English in a very large urban middle school. My students struggle with reading and writing and are dealing with serious personal issues outside of school as well. The school serves a large immigrant community made up of hard working parents.
The mandated reading curriculum does not provide much intellectual stimulation and does not foster a life long love of reading. The mandated program needs to be supplemented with reading that interests the students and is more culturally relevant.
This project would allow us to run literature circles in the room with titles that will stimulate discussion. Middle school students are very social and by allowing them to read and discuss books together, their motivation to read more will increase dramatically.
This project will help my ESL students raise their reading levels at a much faster rate than if I were only using the anthology selections. My students are 2 to 3 grade levels behind their peers in reading - help give them a fighting chance in high school!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
