My Students
Intertwined in my classroom are students who come with various learning and developmental disabilities. I am a fifth grade Self-Contained educator in Brooklyn, NY. Throughout our academic day, my students are continuously on a journey building their knowledge and comprehension skills in all academic areas. In using hands on STEM activities and constructing engaging academic tasks, my students come in everyday motivated to learn new things.
All of the students in my classroom come from diverse socioeconomic environments, but despite this minor setback all of my students show in their own unique way a passion for learning.
As they grow as a community of learners, it is essential for them to be provided with engaging content and educational tools that will help them grow academically. As a teacher, they have taught me how to be diverse in my instruction, as it is required of me to help them with their individual needs. It is my goal to give them everything they need to continue on their path towards academic success.
My Project
In my classroom, my students often have a hard time staying focused and engaged during task that incorporate lengthy passages. I, along with my school community, have begun using the online reading program MyOn. MyOn is tailored for students who struggle with reading comprehension, by utilizing tools that provide students with over 1000 books to choose from and audio books for those who comprehend better through auditory instruction. This program is engaging to my students because of the diverse library they can select a text that is interesting to them, and there are books available on all reading levels.
The main feature of MyOn that it reaps great benefits for my students is the audio reader tool that reads, as well as highlights the words of a story so students can remain engaged.
In having this feature, my students are slowly building their stamina for reading. This feature also adds to the overall reading experience for my students, as they are being provided with both visual and auditory tools that will help them truly follow along with a text.
To have access to high quality headphones, pencils to write down their ideas, and notebooks to have a reflection of their growth throughout this program; all students apart of my classroom community will be able to build their reading comprehension skills one book at a time. In successfully getting this project funded, I will be able to continue to provide this wonderful experience for my students who love to read, but need additional help understanding.
