Listening to Stories

My students need 20 pairs of headphones that will allow them to listen to stories on laptops. This will help to build their reading skills in decoding, fluency and comprehension.

My Students

At the beginning of the school year, my students came up with their reading goals. Most said that they hope to move four-five reading levels by the end of the school year. An Internet program was purchased for them to read books. They currently do so, but would benefit more if they could hear the stories.

My wonderful students are all classified as Special Needs.

They vary in disabilities from intellectual disability, learning disabled, ADHD, Speech or Language impaired and emotionally disturbed. They are great students who rise to every challenge regardless of their disabilities. My school is located in one of New York's high need neighborhoods. Most of the students are without technology access at home, and look forward to the opportunities to use technology in school.

My Project

My students will use the class set of headphones we are requesting to be able to listen to stories online. Listening to a story allows them to understand stories that they struggle to read on their own. The students already like being read to and the reading program we have does that and more. Right now each student has a different book list, so it is impossible for them to have the volume on the laptop on without interfering with others in the room. If the students had headphones, they would be able to listen to their individual stories, learn to decode, hear what fluency sounds like, and increase their comprehension skills because they have now been able to hear the stories through different modes. The headphones are very much needed.

All of the students in the classroom are reading below their grade level.

Building their reading levels is a priority. Having the headphones for the students to use on their individual laptops will allow most students who are easily distracted to be able to focus on what is in front of them. I truly believe that more involvement in the online reading program will assist in the students reaching their end of year goals of increasing their reading levels by four-five levels.
