My Students
Our students are in a tough spot. They just received their own Chromebooks this year. This opens a world of updated information related to our topics in Science.
Approximately 2/3 of our students are below the 5th-grade reading level.
My students are working hard to increase their comprehension, however, most of the Science material is at the 5th-grade reading level. As a former Language Arts teacher, I understand the importance of incorporating reading strategies in the content area.
If I am able to provide my students with headphones, they would be able to hear the text which will increase their comprehension. I would be able to assign articles that are at individualized reading levels. So instead of choosing an article for the entire class to read, I would be able to choose text that is at different reading levels and assign it to the appropriate students based on their reading levels.
My Project
Headphones will allow me to differentiate science passages in my classroom. Our below grade level readers would be given text about the content at their reading level, while above grade level readers would be given text above the 5th-grade reading level.

They also allow equal access to text, not just to those who can afford headphones.
Headphones give all students reading the material at their reading level. By differentiating the text, I am able to meet the needs of all my students.
Studies have shown that listening to text improves reading comprehension, especially in content areas. Headphones would allow my students - especially the lower level students - to increase their reading ability.
