My students need a listening center so they can listen to a book while reading along.

My Students
Listening to reading is comforting and something that a lot of my students do not get to experience at home. When reading the actual text of stories is difficult, being read to gives students the opportunity to love and get excited about books that are rigorous and interesting.
I teach 3rd grade in a high-poverty community in Michigan and, unfortunately, all but two of my students read at a 3rd grade reading level.
Despite this, my school is requiring my students to use 3rd grade curriculum anthologies with no differentiation or leveled readers for students who are a bit behind. My students truly enjoy books on their level, but simply lack the ability to read them. My low readers are tired of reading kindergarten books, that even though are on their level, lack the interest and complexity that 3rd grader readers seek out.
My Project
While listening centers are always beneficial for students in any grade or city or on any level, my students would especially benefit from being able to listen to a book while still flipping through the pages and engaging with complex, grade-level texts. They will also be able to choose and hear their favorite stories, so they can listen to the books they love, even if their inability to read them inhibits them from reading on their own. This listening center would allow my lower students to engage independently with books that are interesting to them but might be too hard. It would allow them to listen to their favorite classics over and over again, and help them feel successful at comprehending complex books.
Students who are below grade level often stay below grade level because they are not given challenging texts simply because they cannot read the words.
Reading is about more than simply reading words, and they will never reach a grade-level standard of comprehension if they are not interacting independently with interesting and rigorous texts. Help my kids succeed and get excited about reading independently!
