Listening to Quality Literature Inspires Children to Read!

My students need a listening center that they can access in the classroom independently, which includes quality literature for them to engage in.

My Students

I would love to have a listening center in my room for second graders! It would be great for my kids to have access to quality literature while they are in rotations. I am one of the reading interventionists at my grade level. I have 12 students in my room for 90 minutes per day.

I teach second grade in a Title I school in Colorado.

My school is considered a "High Risk" school. A Title I School means that my school has a high free and reduced price lunch rate-75.9%. My school also has a large percentage of NEP/LEP(Non-English, or Limited English Proficient) students-22.6%, as well as a high minority rate-59.4%. The students at our school face many challenges- no matter what their ethnic background. Many of our families are struggling to meet the basic needs of their children. We have a high number of families that live together in single households. It is also not an uncommon sight to see grandparents and even great-grandparents care for the children in this community. What has inspired me to stay for 16 years is seeing first hand the potential for my students, and being witness to their desire to learn and achieve.

My Project

My second graders are hungry for good literature--they love it! The students in my intervention groups are at least a year or more behind in reading. They are working so hard to reach grade level by June! I work with three students at a time, the other nine are engaged in literacy rotations, which include word work, reading independently or with an adult. Having a listening center that my students can access successfully will add to their language enrichment. It is important for kids to hear literature being read with correct language and expression! I currently have an old cd player, but it is hard for the kids to operate, and even though I get many cd's from the library, they are often scratched and not working! As a result the kids get frustrated. I try to offer many activities to help these kids overcome their fear of reading and realize how powerful reading is! They love to listen to their favorite stories over and over again-a new listening center will help them do this! We also need two book sets.

It is a challenge to help kids who are already feeling frustrated want to learn how to read!

Providing meaningful literature that they can listen to will help empower them! Second graders want to succeed, it's up to me to provide the means for them to do so! Seeing the joy on their faces while they listen to a good book will help them want to learn how to read. They struggle every day, and work so hard, I want to have a tool in my classroom that will help them succeed!
