This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the wonder of listening to a book on tape? Listening to books on tape would help my students make stronger connections to the stories, as well as help them practice vital early literacy skills.
Our school is in an area whose proximity to oil refineries causes health issues.
Violence has recently been declining but it is still something to worry about. Our school is a place where the children can come and know that they are safe and protected. We strive to give them a place where they can learn without worry or fear. We are lucky to have Breakfast in the Classroom program, which feeds our children breakfast in addition to the free lunch offered to every child in our school. Even though the students in my class live in this type of environment, they come to school excited to learn and love to get time to explore exciting new materials!
My Project
One of the best ways to improve literacy skills for young children is to listen to a story. Studies have shown that reading to young children, even as young as 0 months, can improve their literacy skills and help prepare them for school. In class, I read to them as often as possible but I would love for them to be able to listen to a story above their reading level independently. My player has been broken for a few years now and it's time to get my class back into listening to stories and completing listening skills through activities I have created over the years. We need a listening center, with headphones, a junction box, and read-along storage unit to listen to stories independently.
My students will be able to practice early literacy skills such as listening, following directions, word directionality, print concepts, and much more.
For those who have never been in school, it will help develop their reading readiness skills and sharpen the skills of those who have been exposed to schooling.
