Listening to Become Better Readers

My students need Nanos and iPads to become better readers. Times for Kids will also help diversify what they read. Since they are ELL it will help peak interest.

My Students

Every morning in our classroom we begin the day with working on basic reading skills. This is the place where they get to hear words and see them written. For most of my students English is their second language, so this time is crucial.

My school is a failing Title I school.

My students come from all around the world; the one thing they have in common is the desire to learn. When they come to school, I want them to feel safe and forget everything they that is going on at home. Many of them come with hungry stomachs or dirty clothes. In my classroom, I want the passion for learning to engulf them.

My Project

Imagine not having any books at home and if you do, no one can read them with you to tell you how to pronounce the words. This is why I am asking for iPod Nanos and an iPad for our classroom. Since there our so many kids in my classroom, it is hard to sit with each child alone. So by providing this technology, students can choose a book they are interested in and listen to it read as they follow along. This allows them to both hear it and see it. They can make the connection and become better readers at the same time. To make them feel comfortable in the classroom while they are reading, I am requesting carpet squares. They will be able to use this when they are reading in my classroom. I chose ones with numbers because they will be in charge of their square, I have learned they like to have ownership and this is something that can be theirs while they are in my classroom.

This technology will give my students the confidence they need to become better readers.

They won't question what they are reading aloud in class because they will have heard it said and seen it at the same time. This confidence is crucial at this age and will allow them to grow as students.
