Listening Pleasure for You Alone!

My students need headphones to work on their independent work on their laptops. This way they do not disturb their peers when the program is talking to them.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are wonderful students. They are so eager to learn. They adhere to classroom rules and generally stay on task. However, as we know, students today are under enormous pressure. The expectation set for students today is very high. Every year, students in my school are expected to reach the NYS goals for their grade regardless of the challenges that they face due to their circumstances. Many of my students have economic challenges and lack parental support. As a teacher, it is frustrating to know that many of our students are at a disadvantage, but must still meet their state standards and expectations. The reality is that not all students have writing material at home. I also have students with IEPs and English Language Learners. These students need to develop and catch up to their grade expectations and these materials can help develop their writing potential.

My Project

My students use a computer program that assists them with their learning gap. It teaches them mini-lessons on their level in order for them to catch up to their grade level. When the children are on their laptops, all the different mini-lessons are going on at the same time and it becomes distracting to the class as a whole.

Since I teach children classified as having learning disabilities, I have reading programs that they go on, such as Raz-Kids.

Once the children have read the book to themselves, I like for them to hear what a fluent reader sounds like. Without headphones, they put the volume down very low and it becomes difficult for the students to hear the story.

In my school community, we have many children that are learning the English language, and many of the programs that I have them go on require them to hear the words, stories, and/or pictures; and without the headphones, having the volume so low, defeats the purpose for these programs.

In today's educational times, technology is an amazing "second teacher". But, without the proper equipment, having that "second teacher" in the classroom makes it very challenging.
